Teaching Interests: Biochemistry for MD and undergraduate students, laboratory training of graduate students

Dr Whelan is known especially for his researches on glycogen structure and metabolism. His group discovered that glycogen is constructed on a self glucosylating protein, glycogenin.
His academic career took him from the University of Birmingham to those of North Wales and London, where he worked at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine and as chair of Biochemistry at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine.

In 1967 he joined the University of Miami as chair of Biochemistry, which post he held until 1991. He founded the annual Miami Winter Symposium, which will hold its 50th event in 2017.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, an honorary Member of the Royal College of Physicians of London, a Fellow of the American Association of Academic Scientists and holds the honorary DSc degree of La Trobe University, Australia.

He is the Editor in Chief of IUBMB Life.
