Biography

Eleni Damoulaki-Sfakianaki, MD, MSPH is a Voluntary Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She is a Pediatrician-Neonatologist with training in public health and over 40 years of experience and practice in all aspects of both the medical and the public health fields. She has done clinical practice, research, administration and teaching. At the present time, Dr. Sfakianaki’s primary responsibility with the Department is teaching graduate courses to public health as well as medical students.

A native of Greece, Dr. Sfakianaki obtained her M.D. degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Medical School where she also received her training and board certification in pediatrics. Subsequently, she was awarded a fellowship at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH where she completed a 2-year training in Neonatology and a 6-month training in Medical Genetics. Later on, Dr. Sfakianaki obtained a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Dr. Sfakianaki has held successfully various high level administrative posts in public health including Chief of Statewide Perinatal Services, Ohio Department of Health and, most recently, Medical Executive Director, Florida Health Department in Miami-Dade County. She has also served for many years on numerous non-profit boards and community organizations both locally and nationally and was a frequent presenter to community and civic groups on topics related to her expertise.
 It is this type of experience and expertise gained through her work in public health and her community engagements that Dr. Sfakianaki brings to the classroom when she teaches graduate courses such as Public Health Administration as well as Maternal and Child Health.

Dr. Sfakianaki’s past research activities and publications focused on neonatology, medical genetics services, maternal and child health, childhood lead poisoning, immunizations and the public health aspects of infectious diseases.
Dr. Sfakianaki has received several honors and awards including most recently the Distinguished Alumni Award 2013, Department of Public Health Sciences, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
