A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Spine Care
The University of Miami Spine Institute provides the most advanced diagnostics and treatments available to patients with spinal disorders and injuries. This revolutionary concept in spine care brings together a multi-disciplinary team of highly trained medical and surgical specialists who can offer patients the most innovative diagnostics as well as rehabilitative and surgical strategies which encompasses the spectrum of care for the spine patient.
Led by neurosurgeons, Drs. Barth Green, Allan Levi, Michael Wang and Steven Vanni, the Spine Institute team includes neurosurgical and orthopedic spine surgeons, neurologists, physiatrists, neuroradiologists, anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners and therapists with international reputations in research and clinical programs. The Spine Institute is further enhanced by the support and insight provided by the basic and clinical science research programs at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, the largest spinal cord injury research center in the United States. Additionally, internal medicine consultants are available to assist in pre- and post-operative patient management and work closely with patients’ referring and primary physicians.
A component of the neurological spine surgery division led by Dr. Howard Levene is located on the medical campus at the Miami Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, a National Center of Excellence and a model system for spinal cord injury in the United States.
This multidisciplinary team approach allows for the full spectrum of spine problems to be treated, including:

- Spinal Degenerative Disease, such as herniated disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease

- Cysts, vascular malformations and tethering of the spinal cord
- Acute and sub-acute spine injuries / fractures requiring stabilization and /or decompression of the spinal cord

- Neurofibromatosis, Von Hippel Landau syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis and tuberculosis
- Nerve root and discogenic pain

- Peripheral nerve and brachial plexus injuries and tumors
- Previous unsuccessful spine surgery
The Spine Institute also offers the most sophisticated spine imaging available on site, including the latest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology that identifies not only anatomy, but also vascular flow characteristics and spinal fluid dynamics. Intra-operatively, continuous real-time electrophysiology monitoring to detect any neurological injury ensures the safest possible result. Image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including nerve blocks, functional discography and vertebroplasties are also available.
