Research Interests
MRI is a critical component of treatment for brain and GI tumors. My unique background includes a PhD in magnetic resonance physics in addition to my clinical training as a radiation oncologist. My goal is to use my combined clinical and technical expertise to advance cancer treatment. At the time of writing, the University of Miami has one of only four combined MRI and radiation therapy treatment devices in the USA.
My basic research interests utilize MRI to probe the tumor microenvironment during therapy, giving information beyond just tumor size to evaluate early treatment response. My PhD and post-doctoral research examined metabolic processes in human cancer and other diseases by advanced MR imaging and spectroscopy.

Biography
Dr. Mellon is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Miller School of Medicine. He is a graduate of the Physician Scientist Training Program of the University of Pennsylvania where he earned an MD and a PhD in Biophysics (MRI Physics). He performed his residency training at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL which is among the largest cancer centers in the US. Clinical training was broadened by training at the University of Florida Proton Center and the University of Pennsylvania treating almost exclusively with proton therapy. He lectures and has published numerous articles on cancer imaging and high precision, high dose radiation therapy for cancer.
