Biography

D. Jeffrey Newport is Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He serves as Director of Women’s Reproductive Mental Health.

Dr. Newport completed a graduate theological degree prior to medical school and then received his medical degree from the University of South Carolina. He subsequently completed both a general psychiatry residency and a master’s degree in clinical research at Emory University. He has received numerous awards including the Young Faculty Award from the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education, Independent Investigator Award and Young Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, Lilly Fellowship from the Society of Biological Psychiatry, Laughlin Fellowship from the American College of Psychiatrists, Hoechst Marion Roussel Award from the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, Lilly Psychiatric Research Fellowship from the American Psychiatric Association, Pfizer Psychiatry Resident of the Year Award, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Distinguished Physician Alumnus Award, and the Emory Psychiatry Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Newport’s research focuses on translational studies of women’s mental health with a particular emphasis on the psychobiology of psychiatric illness during pregnancy and the postpartum period, the pharmacokinetics of psychotropic medication during pregnancy and lactation, and the persistent neuroendocrine and behavioral impact of early life adverse experiences.

Dr. Newport has numerous reports relevant to women’s mental health published in journals across multiple disciplines including JAMA, the American Journal of Psychiatry, the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the Archives of General Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, Neuropsychopharmacology, Neurology, Bipolar Disorders, Pediatrics, the British Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. He has given numerous professional presentations at multiple venues including the annual meetings of the American Psychiatric Association, American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology, North American Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics & Gynecology, European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring.
