 Dr. Villamizar provides the most up-to-date surgical procedures and state-of-the-art treatment modalities for all diseases and conditions of the chest.  He performs minimally invasive thoracoscopic lung, esophageal and mediastinal resections. He offers multimodality therapy for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer, mesothelioma and esophageal cancer in conjunction with thoracic medical oncologists and radiation oncologists. We have also opened a Lung Cancer Screening Clinic to help identify lung cancer at its earliest stages.

Biography

Dr. Nestor Villamizar obtained his MD degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, recognized as one of the leading centers in the country.  His postgraduate education included three years of research in cardiothoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center.  He also completed his residency in general surgery at Duke University Medical Center, where he trained under Dr. Thomas D’Amico, a leader in minimally invasive thoracic surgery.  Dr. Villamizar completed his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.  His training included all aspects of general thoracic surgery: tumors of the lung, esophagus, pleura, chest wall and mediastinum, paraesophageal hernias, anti-reflux surgery, esophageal motility disorders and lung transplantation.  He was chief resident under David Sugarbaker, M.D., former president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons and an international expert in the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma.  Dr. Villamizar is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. His research has been presented at several national meetings, and he has numerous publications on high impact journals.  He is fluent in English, Spanish and French.  Dr. Villamizar has recently joined the University of Miami as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and is on staff at the University of Miami Hospital, Sylvester Cancer Comprehensive Center, and Jackson Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Villamizar has a particular interest in minimally invasive thoracic surgery.
